Choosing the Right size Chandelier
Chandeliers are designed to blend in effortlessly with a room. Too large of a chandelier and it may seem to stick out like a sore thumb, too small and it could look out of place. Always keep in mind the height of your Ceiling, The size or Shape of an Island or Table being used, the size of the room you are trying to illuminate and the shape and number of light the Chandelier has.
A Little Math and Walla!
An easy equation to use to get a good estimate on the proper size of a chandelier for a room is to take the Height and Width and add them together. For instance if you have Living room that is 10’ by 18’, you would be looking for a chandelier with 28” in diameter. The Chandelier should not hang any lower than 7 feet to be sure that it is clear from all heads. This should work for any room as a general guide, but if you have something more specific in mind like a Mini Chandelier, or Lighting for a specific purpose, there always or exceptions to the rule.
Another good general rule is that it is often better to error on the side of being slightly too large than being too small.
Sizing up a Dining Room chandelier
Luckily finding the right size chandelier that will fit with your dining room table is pretty easy. Choose a chandelier that is 1/2 of the Width of the table. For instance, if the Dining Room table is a rectangle of 48” wide x 72” long, a chandelier that is approximately 24” (half of the 48” width of the table) in diameter would look fabulous. If the table is a 60” round diameter, a 30” diameter chandelier would be appropriate.
Also the dining room chandelier should be no lower than 30-32 inches above the Dining Table for an 8 foot Ceiling. Go up three inches for every additional foot of Ceiling. If you have Higher than 9 foot Ceilings in your Dining room then look for a multi-Tier chandelier to help fill in space.
If you want to hang two chandeliers over an exceptionally long dining room table (for example a table that is approximately 54” wide x 120” long), then if you select chandeliers that are 1/3 the width of the table and hang them centered on each end of the table that would be correct. Therefore each chandelier would be approximately 18” in diameter.
The height of the actual chandelier should be determined on the ceiling height of the room. Many Designers follow the rule of allowing 2 ½” – 3” for each foot of a rooms height. Using this calculation, a room that has an 8’ ceiling can use a chandelier that is approximately 20” to 24” in height. If the ceiling is 10 feet high, than a light fixture that is 25” to 30” would look more appropriate.
Calculating The Wattage Required In Any Room
How do I determine the correct amount of wattage to properly illuminate a room?
Example: a 12” by 16” room. Multiply the room dimensions to get your total square footage (12 x 16=192). Then multiply the square footage by 1.5 for total illumination needed (192 x 1.5 = 288 watts).

When looking for a chandelier for your home, you should have a good sense of what kind of Home Décor you have and what style would look best. Simply match the style of your home with that of the chandelier. Is your Room or home modern, western/rustic, traditional or something more feminine like Shabby Chic?
