One Look At A Bobeche Chandelier Is All It Takes

Bobêche is a fancy word for a wax drip catcher. On many Candle Chandeliers you will see these just underneath the candle sleeve supporting the candelabra bulb on a lighting arm. They may also come with pillar candles and they are usually in the same material and finish as the overall Chandelier or lighting piece, but they may also be different colors. They add to the authenticity of faux candles and candelabra bulbs that are used in Chandeliers and other fixtures. Bobêches were necessary for long burning candles to be left unattended on table tops, and on an overhead chandeliers so that the wax wouldn’t drip on the guests below.

On a Crystal Chandelier, the Bobêches may also be made of crystal. This adds just a little more surface   area for the light to reflect off of. It can also add to the ornate nature of a large statement piece, by adding some perpendicular lines to the arms. Conversely, in a simpler rustic piece, the bobêches can add to the rustic simplicity of a chandelier by making it look like a real candle. Many of the Medieval and Western themed chandeliers that have exposed pillar candles will have black or iron bobêches.

Bobêches can be fairly flat and simple or they may quite large and curved upward like a small cup. The style of Chandelier will dictate the style of the bobêches. Many of the cut leaded crystal chandeliers have bobêches of matching etched designs. Even ornate acrylic or Lucite chandeliers will have bobêches to further the illusion of real crystal.

You will also see bobêches on matching wall sconces and table or desk lamps. They may be as small as one candle, of may have 3 candles with bobêches and drop pendants or swags.  These will coordinate nicely with any Bobêche Chandelier you choose.
